NEW PART OF WORLD’S LARGEST CAVE DISCOVERED

A new underwater tunnel connecting Son Doong Cave in Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park in central Quang Binh province was recently found by British divers. The new cave has been named Hang Thung and adds an additional 1.6 million cu m in volume to Son Doong, which now measures 38.5 million cu m.

Earlier, Oxalis Adventure the only company licensed to take travelers into Son Doong Cave, invited the British divers to visit the cave following their rescue of a soccer team trapped in a cave in Thailand last year. For something interesting during the trip, they came up with the idea of diving Son Doong to a depth of about 78 meters, which had never been done before.

Discovered by a local man in 1991, Son Doong Cave was first explored in 2009 by the British Cave Research Association and has been open to the public since 2013. Geologists say the cave formed 2 to 5 million years ago and is roughly 6.5 km long, 200 meters high, and 150 meters wide. It is officially recognized as the world largest cave by the World Record Association and WorldKings.
