  • Can Tho Tourism Festival

    The Can Tho Tourism Festival is being organised to promote the tourism, culture and people of Can Tho, in the heart of the Mekong Delta. Highlights of the event include the opening ceremony, with musical performances, the ‘Hoa dang Ninh Kieu’ (Ninh Kieu floating lantern) contest, and boat races. For the first time, the ‘Ninh Kieu floating lantern’ contest will present about 60 lanterns in different colours and creative shapes on Khai Luong Channel over the course of one week, from 19 to 25 August. The Can Tho Tourism Festival will also feature art and cultural activities such as a photo exhibition on the topic ‘Ninh Kieu - Can Tho: Past and Present’, performances of don ca tai tu (folk music from the Mekong Delta) on the river, artisans making traditional cakes and cuisine, calligraphy writing, portrait painting, and folk games.

    An electric car service for tourists has gotten underway in the Mekong Delta’s Can Tho city, providing a new and environmentally-friendly way to take in the city’s sights. Three 9-15 seat cars will go into service initially, with three more to be added during the first quarter. Routes include Ninh Kieu Wharf - Truc Lam Phuong Nam Monastery - My Khanh, Ninh Kieu Wharf - Thu Khoa Huan Monument - Binh Thuy Temple, and Ninh Kieu Wharf - Tan An Temple - Night Market. Tickets are VND20,000 per km. Some 26 other electric cars will be put into service if trial operations prove successful. The city welcomed 7.5 million tourists last year, including 300,000 foreigners. The local tourism sector is to develop into a key economic sector by 2020.

    Cai Rang Floating Market in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho will be built into a strong tourism brand under a major plan to turn tourism into a spearhead economic sector in the city by 2020. Local authorities plan to develop rest areas, homestay services, and eateries serving local delicacies. New tourism products also need to be created. Promoting tourism via online channels like social networks will enable access to large numbers of tourists at low cost. More attention also needs to be paid to improving the foreign language skills of organisations and individuals working in the tourism industry.

  • First container market to appear in Can Tho

    Popular around the world, a container market will appear in Can Tho for the first time in May, promising to provide a new attraction in the city. The market will be held at a villa on Tran Van Giau Street in Ninh Kieu district every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. More than 200 booths on an area of over 12,000 sq m will sell clothes, shoes, bags and other goods as well as food. Shop owners are free to decorate their space to suit their style and the items on sale. There is also an amusement space for kids. The site can welcome 10,000 visitors a day.
