To celebrate the festive season my friends I got together for dinner at the Au Lac Do Brazil Steak Restaurant on Pasteur Street in D.3, HCMC, where we were welcomed by the atmosphere of a Brazilian-style carnival, with music and colourful decorations such as paintings of flowers, leaves, birds and carnival dancers on the walls and pillars. The two-storey restaurant has large dining rooms, a thatched-roof bar, and a wine cellar filled with wines from around the world.
After opening its first restaurant in 2003, Au Lac Do Brazil has become famous for authentic Brazilian Churrascaria, an ‘All you can eat’ Brazilian style BBQ where meat is brought to guest’s table on skewers by a passador (waiter). According to Ha My from the Sales and Marketing Department at the restaurant, Au Lac Do Brazil uses only the best quality imported meat coupled with the freshest vegetables, and all are carefully prepared with ‘secret marinades and techniques’ by trained and experienced chefs. The meat is then barbecued to perfection before being served.
We decided on the ‘All you can eat’ dinner buffet so we could enjoy a big grill party, but the restaurant also offers a selection of BBQ dishes on an a la carte menu and a plank steak menu with dishes served on an American wooden oak plank, as well as a salad menu, hot dishes, and some traditional Brazilian dishes.
We started with a green salad before being served the first of the BBQ dishes on skewers - grilled Calabtian pork sausage, a special sausage made according to a special recipe unique to Au Lac Do Brazil, and prawns, which were hot and delicious. I liked how the grilled dishes were served by the passador directly to our table, which made me think of the atmosphere of an outdoor party in the garden. The aroma of the grilled meat attracted us before it arrived on our table.
We were excited to try a wide range of BBQ dishes, such as shrimp with bacon, pork ribs, lamb leg, smoked ham, and cupim - a strongly flavoured meat carefully and slowly roasted for at least four hours and served well done. Personally, I was impressed by the smoked ham, with a flavourful brine balanced perfectly with sweet and fresh grilled pineapple. Each grilled dish is accompanied by different sauces as well as a choice of salads, tomato and onion, and of course we didn’t miss out on a glass of red wine.
Finally, we enjoyed some coconut rice with black bean soup, a traditional Brazilian dish, before a dessert of fresh passionfruit ice cream, which was a great way to relax our full stomachs.
The restaurant also offers internal and external catering services for families and companies.
