The word ‘Salsa’ always makes me think of colourful carnivals in Brazil, but I explored another Salsa in HCMC that also has a Brazilian flavour, but not dancing, cuisine.

Salsa Restaurant opened just over a month ago on Nguyen Hue in the city centre, in a two story abode adjacent the Times Square Building and with a Latin American theme throughout and quaint seating for a quick lunch or dinner.

Salsa Restaurant is truly the home of Latin American cuisine in HCMC, and where Executive Chef Marcelo Geraldini provides guests with a gourmet experience in traditional Brazilian dishes from his hometown as well as Mexican and Peruvian dishes such as Carne Asada, Peruvian Ceviche, Fajitas, Tacos, and Alitas de Pollo. ‘I am excited to share my country’s food and culture at Salsa Restaurant,’ Marcelo said. He began cooking when he was about 14 years old with his mother and grandparents and then made it his career. He lived and worked in Chile, Argentina, the US, the UK, Italy, France, Germany, and Denmark for over five years, where he learned his art from renowned chefs.

It was exciting to enjoy some of his dishes for lunch. My friend and I love tacos very much and it was the first dish we searched for in the menu. We ordered two types of tacos for our main course: beef tacos for me and chicken tacos for my friend, served with pico de galio, guacamole and sour cream, Ensalada tropical (grilled chicken, minced lettuce, tomato, avocado and a mango-lime dressing) for the starter, and Sopa de mariscos (seafood soup). We were surprised at the prices - just VND98,000 per dish. It seemed so cheap in such a luxurious restaurant on Nguyen Hue.

Lunch started with the soup, which was red in colour from the chilli and very good, quite spicy, and served with small pieces of crispy bread. We liked the Ensalada tropical, a fresh and healthy dish with a nice presentation. Finally, our hot tacos arrived, and an appealing aroma filled the air. I slowly enjoyed the beef tacos with crispy bread - a perfect dish from Chef Marcelo.

If you love Latin American cuisine or are keen to try it for first time, then head to Salsa Restaurant. In the evening it also serves classic cocktails such as margaritas, caipirinhas, and daiquiris, made by a skilled bartender.

Open daily from 11am to 11pm.
