  • Barriers being built on HCMC footpaths to prevent cars and bikes

The HCMC Department of Transport has built barriers on footpaths along certain streets in the city centre to prevent motorists from encroaching upon them. A government decision effective last August imposes a fine of VND300,000-VND400,000 ($13-$17) on motorbike drivers who drive on the footpath and a fine of up to VND1.2 million ($53) for motor car drivers, but many still do so during peak hour, threatening the safety of pedestrians and damaging the footpaths. On Pasteur, Ly Tu Trong, and Nguyen Binh Khiem Streets, the barriers have been welcomed by local residents.
