Local telephone codes change
Area telephone codes for 59 of Vietnam’s 63 cities and provinces changed in the middle of February. All area codes will start with a ‘2’ and be either two or three digits long. Callers will be required to dial the new area code when placing domestic calls. The change will be conducted in three phases, with the first phase having started in February in 13 provinces. Subsequent phases will wrap up in August, in 46 provinces. The area codes in four cities and provinces will remain unchanged. Existing phone numbers will remain the same and there will not be any changes to calls between fixed line numbers within the same city or province. However, the changes will affect calls between different cities and provinces and incoming calls from mobile phones and foreign countries to a fixed line number. In such cases, callers will be required to use the new area codes. The change will be done in three steps: announcements in the media, retention of the old phone numbers and the introduction of new numbers for 30 days, and maintaining notifications of the change for at least 30 days afterwards.
The following cities and provinces are subject to the changes in the first phase, from 7 February to 14 April.
