Racers passed through remote areas in each stage of the course, comprising single track, dirt road, and asphalt.

The race consisted of three days of extremely varied mountain biking across three of the most remote and beautiful areas near the town. Stage 1, at 48 kilometres and an elevation of 1,350 metres above sea level, took place on the first day in the beautiful and rarely visited Muong Hum area north of Sapa. Stage 2, on the second day, covered 68 kilometres at an elevation of 1,800 metres, with riders crossing the Thanh Phu area to the south of the town. The race was then capped off with sprint in Stage 3 on the third day, ending in Sapa town after a 27-kilometre ride at an elevation of 750 metres.

The race was a hard fought battle to the end, but eventually Fraser Young won out on the final beast of a climb, with Paul Lasenby (from Hoi An Kayak Tours) taking second place and Pierre Arnaud Le Magnan storming home for third.
