In their daily life they use horses to transport products between their fields and their home. On days of relaxation in the spring, young people take to their horses to nearby mounds and race. Gradually it became a hobby for people to come and watch the horses race.

The races are not professional affairs but rather joyful activities to welcome in the new year, so anyone with a horse can enter. Interestingly, most of the horses are mares and many are frightened by the crowd and refuse to race. Others, though, are so aggressive that they buck their jockeys. In such moments the crowd applauses and shouts out loudly, to encourage both the horse and the rider to continue racing.

Since 2005 Phu Yen province has promoted and invested in the race, together with restoring the historic tunnel system from wartime, to develop the province’s tourism industry. The horse racing festival has now become an important local event.
