A book on Kim Hoang folk painting has been launched by a group of Vietnamese at the Culture Exchange Centre in Hanoi.

The book, a hard working project of Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hoa, Director of the Vietnam Ceramic Museum, professor Trinh Sinh and photographer Le Bich, aims to honour and preserve the folk painting as well as the heritage of the country.

With the support of artisans from Kim Hoang village, folk painting collectors, painters, photographers and culture researchers, the book was introduced to public with information and hundreds of illustration pictures, providing an overview about Kim Hoang village, the history, the making process and the art of the folk paintings, and its role in the Vietnam.

On the occasion of the launching, it also introduced how the paintings applied in the modern life, for example, new paintings and products using typical patterns in the paintings like the image of pigs in ceramic products for decoration in the coming new year as the  zodiac animal for the lunar year of 2019.

Kim Hoang is a famous genre of folk paintings in the northern Red River delta provinces dating back to the 18th century. Along with Hang Trong and Dong Ho, Kim Hoang paintings were well received in the 19th century, but the tradition of making the paintings gradually declined and was ultimately lost in the middle of the 20th century. They mostly portray fixtures in the simple lives of people in the northern delta region, such as buffaloes, pigs, chicken, and village life on the Lunar New Year.
