The Quang Ninh International Airport will open and welcome its first flight by the end of 2017, authorities in the northern province said. The airport will be built on Van Don Island, some 50 km from Halong Bay on an area of some 290 ha, with one runway, one terminal, and an apron for four medium to large-sized aircraft. It can welcome up to 2 million passengers a year once in operation and is expected to be expanded after 2020 to welcome up to 5 million passengers a year. The Halong - Van Don Road has received site clearance approval and will link with the Halong - Haiphong Highway by the beginning of 2018. The province has also invested in the construction of a connecting road from the centre of Van Don to the airport.
